Pan across factory complex Helsinki - 5 April 2012 9. Wide exterior of Nokia's flagship store in downtown Helsinki 10. Mid exterior of display of new products in store window 11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Ismo Rantala, Head of Finnish Mobile Phone Association: "There is no any more production as we saw that before. We used to have factories, and we used to be in hardware business. Today, mobile is software business. We have our factories in our heads. So basically, during the past one year we have got more than one hundred spin-off start-ups from Nokia. All of them are doing some global software business." 12. Mid exterior of Nokia's store showing new products in window STORYLINE: As Finland's most famous corporation shifts its mobile phone assembly to Asia, towns which relied on Nokia for employment and revenue are facing an uncertain future. Squeezed by fierce competition from Apple Inc.'s iPhone, Samsung Electronics and cheaper brands running Google Inc.'s popular Android software, Nokia has been forced to slash costs, primarily affecting its operations in Europe. Nokia has closed plants in Germany, Hungary and Romania; and one of the main assembly plants in the town of Salo, in southwest Finland. Some one thousand of the 3,500 jobs in Salo, which was until recently Nokia's flagship assembly hub, are being cut this year. Salo's mayor Antti Rantakokko knows these are extremely difficult financial times for his town of 55-thousand people. "They said, why does it happen for me? Why does it happen to my family, and what's our future? These are the questions," he said. Mayor Rantakokko has a shiny office in a glass-plate and metal building that opened four months ago, partly paid for by Nokia's local taxes, which accounted for 95 percent of the town's tax income that peaked at almost 60 (m) million euros in 2010. In 2008 Nokia employed 5-thousand people in Salo, nearly 10 percent of the population and provided work for 2-thousand others in the IT industry, mainly Nokia suppliers. Now the once-thriving technological centre is fast becoming a town of dusty, empty storefronts. Solutions to the problem of Nokia's downsizing in Salo do not come easily. But Rantakokko pointed out that his town has a large knowledge base. "We have know-how," he said. "We have managed earlier, and it can be managed also in the future and just now." Nokia became the world's top cell phone maker in 1998 when it surpassed Motorola Inc., striking a chord in the tenacious nation that had struggled to rebuild after fending off Soviet invasion during two wars against Stalin's Red Army. Nokia then became Finland's largest firm, overtaking the paper and wood industry as an export earner and provided work for thousands. In 2007, it paid out a record 1.2 (b) billion euros in corporate taxes to the government. After Nokia reached its proclaimed goal of 40 percent global market share in 2008, sales started to lag as the company suffered under the onslaught of inventive mobile technologies from the US, the world's biggest wireless market.
